PPE Emergency

What is PPE?

Personal protective equipment. It is the layer of protection that every health worker should have between themselves and an infected COVID-19 patient. There are various categories of PPE, which includes:

Why is it so essential?

COVID-19 is an airborne respiratory disease, that means it is passed through surface contamination and particles in the air. PPE provides vital protection for the user from the virus encountering the parts of the body which can ingest COVID-19 (eyes, nose and mouth). This helps to keep our vital health workers clear of the virus and able to care for the sick.

Why is 1bn items not enough?

At the time of writing, it is estimated that 1bn items of PPE have been distributed and used by UK health workers. PPE is the only layer of protection between an healthcare worker and an infectious patient. As we know, the COVID-19 virus can remain on a surface for up to 72 hours, so it is important that health workers dispose of equipment which may have met the virus.

We need another 1bn items NOW…  and soon another 1bn.

Where is the next 1bn?

PPE in recent weeks and months has become very difficult to locate and import from abroad as the demand for PPE increases globally. We MUST produce more PPE here in the UK and find novel ways to fill the supply shortfalls because of this global pandemic.
